U.S. Open Beer Championship Announces Medal Winners

U.S. Open Beer Championship Announces Medal Winners

Breweries from China to the Czech Republic sent in almost 4,000 beers and ciders representing 90 different styles for the 2015 U.S. Open Beer Championship. This competition includes professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers. Today, judges from England, Canada and the U.S. announced the winners.
More than 20 international breweries from Australia, China, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Mexico, Sweden, Finland, Scotland and England competed.
Ballast Point Brewing in San Diego, California was named Grand National Champion by winning three gold medals and one silver medal. Their three beers that were awarded gold medals were Ballast Point Pale Ale, Calico Amber Ale and Sculpin IPA.
Judging in the U.S. Open Beer Championships is blind; the judges do not know what beers they are tasting.

“It’s amazing what brewers will do to enter the U.S. Open. In the past, brewers have personally delivered their craft beers from Columbia and Brazil. This year, Joshua Deitner from Shanghai Brewery in China traveled 7,263 miles to deliver his beers personally,” said Dow Scoggins, Director of the U.S. Open. He added that the effort paid off: Shanghai Brewery’s Imperial American Brown Ale was awarded a silver medal.

We’re excited to welcome this new NC cidery to our market!
Hard cider doesn’t have to be sickeningly sweet and taste artificial. Bull City Ciderworks crafts refreshingly unique, gluten-free hard ciders using NC apples and a wide variety of local ingredients whenever possible. We don’t back sweeten with high fructose corn syrup, so you taste the apple in all its glory! We transform hard cider with ingredients ranging from tea, honey and hops to ginger, strawberry and spruce tips. We also conduct experimental small batches fermenting with unorthodox yeasts and bacteria to create unique hard cider that are distinctly Bull City! The BULL is busting out of the box and changing perceptions of what great cider is all about. Different is delicious.
We’ll be pouring the following on draft:
Smooth Hoperator– dry-hopped with Cascade, Citra & Galaxy; floral aroma, tropical notes and mild bitterness
Rhiz Up– spiced with generous amounts of fresh ginger rhizomes

With great trends come deceitful imposters, and as is the case with phony craft cocktail and wine bars, there are a lot of beer joints that really fall flat.

It seems that everybody is brewing a session IPA these days. We’re not gonna lie, this is one trend we’re not mad at. To be able to keep the amazing aromas and bright flavours of a hoppy IPA but drop the palate busting and 6%+ ABV levels while keeping the alcohol content reasonable is a great concept. We’re seeing lots of new offerings in this style, especially this time of year. Keep an eye out for new arrivals like Ipswich S.I.P.A., Foothills Hop Job, Left Hand Introvert and so many more. Drink up and don’t worry about falling off of your barstool. Cheers!

Seven cans were rationed in Sept. but future deliveries were uncertain.)

Brewconomy is a documentary about North Carolina beer.
Through the voices of brewers, community leaders, government officials, scientists, farmers, business owners and others, Brewconomy tells the story of craft brewing’s affect on agriculture, community and economy. These effects include providing jobs, increasing tax revenue, strengthening community ties, encouraging agricultural innovation, and production and generally improving the overall state economy.
The rise of craft beer is here. Even though it represents less than 10% of the total beer sales in the United States craft beer is growing steadily, especially in North Carolina. Brewconomy explores the growth of Southern beer and its positive impact on the agriculture, community and economy. As educated consumers choose more robust, flavourful beers, how will the state meet demand? Will it reach a tipping point? Or will craft beer bring more great things to North Carolina?

We’re getting ready to roll out an entire month of amazing sour ales! Sours are amazingly refreshing on a warm day. Every spring, we amass a worldly selection of sour ales for our month-long promotion, April Showers Bring May Sours. Offerings from all over Europe and the United States will line our coolers and draft lines all month.

Some beer trends come and go, but sours have long-lasting appeal. Many Belgian and German breweries that produce sours have been doing so for hundreds of years, and American breweries that produce sours have sealed a place in the market.

“Sour” is a term that covers many types of beer, including Lambics (both flavoured i.e. Kriek, Framboise, Pêche, etc. and unflavoured i.e. Gueuze), Flanders reds & Flemish browns (both flavoured i.e. cherry and unflavoured), as well as German styles Berlinerweisse and Gose.

Yeast is the magic component that determines a sour. Some yeasts are purposely added to the beers to procure that sour flavor. However, lambics are brewed with an open fermentation technique, allowing natural wild airborne yeasts to ferment and impart a unique sour flavor.

Cape Fear Wine & Beer has around a dozen different type of sour ales in bottles and on draft year-round, but the entire month of May is devoted to showcasing these standard and several rare, unique sours. We’ll be introducing various types of sours from all over the world all month long. Stay tuned to our newsletters and our facebook page for the newest additions, and ask your bartender for the sour ales available.

We’re pleased to announce our Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel event! Join us and Rochelle Leone of Freedom Beverage as we enjoy this amazing, highly sought-after beer.

This imperial (10.9% ABV) Oatmeal stout is brewed with one of the world’s most expensive coffees, made from droppings of weasel-like civet cats. The fussy Southeast Asian animals only eat the best and ripest coffee berries. Enzymes in their digestive system help to break down the bean. Workers collect the bean-containing droppings for Civet or Weasel Coffee. The exceedingly rare Civet Coffee has a strong taste and an even stronger aroma.

Longmont, CO & Brevard, NC—Ladies and gentlemen, hop occultists from all walks of life, please give a thunderous round of applause for the fourth incarnation of Oskar Blues’ GUBNA Imperial IPA. Weighing in at 100+ international bitterness units and 10 percent ABV, this complex and chameleonic concoction packs a wallop. The Granddaddy of all Oskar Blues’ hop grenades in a can, GUBNA obliterates the ordinary. If G’Knight or Deviant Dale’s seem too tame for you, it’s time to experience the most challenging and notorious elixir from OB’s diabolical roster of ferocious fermentables.

Every year, Oskar Blues’ eccentric fellowship of deranged brewers work with hop growers to seek out the most potent, unique and mind-bending hop varietals of the season. By annually altering the hop bill, GUBNA continually reinvents itself while letting the best and brightest of these powerful flowers flourish.

GUBNA v 4.0 is aggressively dry-hopped with the citrusy Chinook (this year’s legendary crop was especially complex), the tropical fruit and red berry notes of Mosaic, and the zesty lemon Sorachi Ace strain. Showcased on a base recipe of Rye (now double the amount than previously used), North American Pale, and Munich malts, these three formidable hop varieties are given free rein to assault the senses in a strangely schizophrenic symphony of bewildering bitterness, complemented perfectly by the pleasant warmth to be expected from that 10 percent booziness.
The GUBNA pairs beautifully with grilled salmon, cured meats, sharp cheeses and spiced or caramel-rich desserts. Simultaneously subtle yet over-the-top, GUBNA also holds up wonderfully when used for grilling beer-can chicken. Of course, this frothy behemoth is glorious on its own as well.
Spring’s hoppy answer to the gargantuan chocolate malt bomb Ten FIDY (OB’s infamous Winter seasonal), GUBNA 2014 will be available on tap and in 12-ounce 4-packs from March until May. Always evolving, no two GUBNA yearswill ever be the same, so grab version 4.0 while you still CAN!
In honor of this auspicious occasion, both Oskar Blues locations (in Brevard, NC and Longmont, CO) will be hosting release parties on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at both Tasty Weasel tap rooms. If you’re lucky enough to be in either location, stop in and enjoy specialty barrel-aged and firkin variations on GUBNA 4.0, along with food, brewery tours, live music and general debauchery.
Oskar Blues gained notoriety as the first craft brewery to seriously consider putting serious beers into recyclable aluminum cans more than 10 years ago. Initially laughed at by their colleagues, the trend caught on when other breweries took notice and agreed that cans are simply a better vessel for keeping beer fresher longer, away from the adverse effects of UV light and ingress oxygen.
Since then, OB has evolved into an off-kilter “jack of all trades” in the beer world, adding four Colorado restaurants , the Hops & Heifers Farm and REEB Cycles hand-made bicycle company to the family. Seriously focused on having fun, pushing boundaries and making stuff we like, Oskar Blues is like no other craft brewery in the world.
Do yourself a favor and get some GUBNA before it’s gone. If you need help, visit our on- line beer locator.
Harrumph!
About Oskar Blues Brewery
Founded as a brewpub by Dale Katechis in 1997, Oskar Blues Brewery launched the craft beer-in-a-can apocalypse in 2002 using a tabletop machine that sealed one can at a time. In 2008, the makers of the top-selling pale ale in ColoRADo, Dale’s Pale Ale, moved into a 35,000-square-foot facility in Longmont, ColoRADo. The brewery has since experienced explosive growth—packaging 59,000 barrels of beer in 2011 and 86,750 barrels in 2012. In December of 2012, Oskar Blues opened the doors to an additional brewery in Brevard, North Carolina. Together, the breweries packaged 119,000 barrels of beer in 2013, distributing trailblazing craft brews to 34 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.
