In the days leading up to Lighthouse’s Beer Festival, Wilmington becomes flooded with only the best craft beer. Bars, bottle shops, breweries and restaurants are hosting a variety of events and tastings in order to promote ourselves and the breweries we’re partnered up with, but most importantly, the overarching concepts of the craft beer industry. We hope you come out to our events and share some great beers and some great times with great people.

Marking the thirteenth installment of the Backstage Series, Founders brings us reDANKulous, an Imperial Red IPA which is a no frills, bold 9.5% ABV India Pale Ale. It pours a pleasing burnt amber with some sweetness due to the Caramalt and roasted barley used in the malt bill. But hops are the true headliner in this elaborate sensory experience. The spicy, piney, tropical complexities of Chinook, Mosaic and Simcoe hops hit you right away with their dank aroma—and they stick around. Take a sip to have your palate simultaneously walloped and caressed in all the right places. Combined, the hops take the beer to 90 IBUs. It’s not just ridiculous. It’s reDANKulous.
“We love hops,” said Co-Founder and President Dave Engbers. “Simple as that. Our brewers love to experiment with new varieties, new combinations and new techniques. This dank beer is a fun, intense showcase of hops. We hope all of you hop heads out there enjoy it.”

Dogfish Head, the country’s 13th largest craft brewery, today announced it has sold a 15 percent stake to LNK Partners, a New York-based private equity firm that has previously invested in companies like Niman Ranch, Performance Bicycle, Beachbody and Au Bon Pain, among others.
Specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. On its website, LNK said it typically invests between $50 — $150 million. Half of those investments are for minority equity positions, according to the firm.

LNK will obtain one seat on Dogfish Head’s board of directors, which currently has five voting members, as well as informal advisors. The brewery’s primary goal, Calagione said, is to fuel enough growth that it can eventually repurchase LNK’s 15 percent stake and keep Dogfish Head “family-controlled” for the next decade.

And here is Sam Calagione’s response to the critiques:
Dogfish is not huge. I don’t know the exact math but I guess we are somewhere around one tenth of one percent of the US beer industry. An industry of 4000 breweries where two international conglomerates control over 80 percent of our country’s beer market. Something doesn’t seem quite right about that to me. Which is a big part of the reason I believe in the Brewers Association definition of a craft brewery and why we are making the decisions we are making at Dogfish. I know not every beer lover shares this belief and that’s cool – to each their own. IF there was only one opinion we would all be drinking one beer and that would suck. But a lot of us do believe in the Brewer’s Association definition and there are a whole lot of small (not huge) breweries of different degrees of small (not huge) betting on this. Dogfish is still controlled by the Calagione family by a very healthy margin – one husband, one wife, two kids (a pretty small family, not huge). We’re a Mom and Pop shop and we are proudly working alongside 230 amazing and talented co-workers making a lot of off-centered goodness. We intend to keep it this way at least until our kids are old enough that we know if one or both of them are willing and capable of keeping it going.

Ballast Point just released a coffee ale with a touch of cream. “Calm Before the Storm came from a quest for a warm weather alternative to our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter. Like its more robust cousin, we infuse a punch of flavor using cold brewed Caffé Calabria coffee and a hint of vanilla. But this time, we added it to a lighter-bodied golden cream ale. The end result is a surprisingly bright, coffee-forward beer that’s perfectly refreshing.” 5.5% ABV, 15 IBU’s. Cape Fear Wine & Beer currently has this beer in stock, available in 12 ounce six packs. Get it while you can!

One of the big controversial moves in the craft beer business is Lagunitas’ merge with Heineken. Now, as a bar that serves absolutely no Heineken and very little Lagunitas, we’re going to stay out of it… but we do want to let you read and decide on your own.

For those in the know who have BeerAdvocate.com accounts, here’s a direct statement from an insider at Lagunitas. http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/lagunitas-brewing-company-creates-a-joint-venture-with-heineken.332950/

At the end of July, Brewbound, one of the most influential craft beer portals in the US, announced that the industry giant, AB InBev reached out to Dogfish Head to start some conversations about a possible deal in the future.
“They reached out to us and wanted to talk about some of their recent craft deals and arranging something similar,” said Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head for Brewbound.
But unlike many other craft brewers, Sam didn’t even talk to the executives of the global enterprise. He informed them that he was not interested in the meeting and invited them to participate in a regular visit day in his brewery.
The CEO and founder of Dogfish Head explained that he don’t intend to change the family status of his business in the coming years with some strong statements: “The BA definition of an indie craft brewery is too important to me,” he said. “We are a family-controlled company, but we have other stakeholders. We are always going to come from a pure place and I feel an obligation to keep Dogfish Head a family-owned company that prioritizes our passion for beer over a passion for making money.”
The AB InBev interest at Dogfish Head is comprehensive, since the brewery is showing growth of over 10% annually over the past 17 years. The craft brewery also has a craft distillery, a hotel and a brewpub in Delaware.
The brewery now produces more than 250,000 barrels (about 30 million litres) of beer and has as its flagship 60 Minute IPA, which represents almost half of its sales in volume, followed closely by 90-Minute IPA and its version of the Belgian Witbier, Namaste. After a large investment made about two years ago, the brewery still has spare capacity to double its production but it rather grow in a more organized way despite the existing market potential.

Gose is one of the more unusual beers on the market today, an ancient German style that just five years ago was largely unknown in the United States. Just in time for our most recent drop of fresh Westbrook Gose, we found this interesting article from the NY Times about the style and its history. Of course, we don’t carry all of these gose beers, as our distribution network is much different than NY’s. Nonetheless we strive to have a varied selection of the style. Most notably, Westbrook and Anderson Valley. Enjoy the last bit of summer heat with a refreshing gose.

Thursday:

  • POP THE CAP 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
We’ll be celebrating a huge turning point in NC’s beer scene. Prior to the legislation change, NC was limited to beers 6% and under. A committed group of beer people formed Pop The Cap, including our own Lector Bennett, petitioned the state to repeal the Prohibition-era law.
All of the beers we’ll have on tap have some significance to us and our involvement in the movement, Pop The Cap. Fullsteam’s founder, Sean Lilly Wilson, was hugely instrumental in the movement and so we’ll have two of his beers on tap: his flagship Lager and his Paycheck Pils. One of the breweries we patiently awaited was the legendary Trappist, Chimay. We managed to score a keg of their Dorée, a limited spiced pale ale. And though this seems to not have much connection to the history, we’ll have 21st Amendment’s Brew Free! or Die IPA. Because, Brew Free or Die.

  • Throwback Thursday: Revisit one of our old favourite beers.
  • ExBEERiment: This week, Josh Russell will be infusing Fullsteam Southern Lager with strawberries & basil. The first pint pours at 9 PM.

Friday

  • New Favourite Friday: Try the latest & greatest!

Saturday:

  • Bartender’s Choice: You never know what you’re going to get!

Sunday:

  • Beer Church: This week we’ll be filling pint glasses with some great brews out of the original Asheville, NC brewery, Highland Brewing Company! We have their St. Terese’s Pale Ale, Gaelic Amber Ale, Oatmeal Porter and the new King MacAlpin Imperial IPA. Masses are at 1 PM and 8 PM.

From a press release 7/24:
This Friday, 7/24 at 6 PM, we will debut the first of many releases in an ongoing series of collaborations we are calling the Barrel Exchange Program. We will trade full oak barrels of beer with other sour beer producers around the country to create rare and unique collaboration blends. The first release is “Wicked Red,” a collaboration with Wicked Weed Brewing in Asheville, NC. Wicked Red features a 50/50 blend of Wicked Weed’s sour red ale (a component of their Oblivion) with our Blackberry Wheat. Tart and complex, this extremely rare and limited release won’t last long! 7.8% ABV
As of now, Wicked Weed do not have proper distribution in our market, but we’ve been seeing steady drops of Cascade which gives us hope we will get our hands on some of this series!

  • Bull City Cider Kickoff:
We’re excited to welcome this new NC cidery to our market!
Hard cider doesn’t have to be sickeningly sweet and taste artificial. Bull City Ciderworks crafts refreshingly unique, gluten-free hard ciders using NC apples and a wide variety of local ingredients whenever possible. We don’t back sweeten with high fructose corn syrup, so you taste the apple in all its glory! We transform hard cider with ingredients ranging from tea, honey and hops to ginger, strawberry and spruce tips. We also conduct experimental small batches fermenting with unorthodox yeasts and bacteria to create unique hard cider that are distinctly Bull City! The BULL is busting out of the box and changing perceptions of what great cider is all about. Different is delicious.
We’ll be pouring the following on draft:
Smooth Hoperator- dry-hopped with Cascade, Citra & Galaxy; floral aroma, tropical notes and mild bitterness
Rhiz Up- spiced with generous amounts of fresh ginger rhizomes
