April Showers Bring May Sours

April Showers Bring May Sours

We’re getting ready to roll out an entire month of amazing sour ales! Sours are amazingly refreshing on a warm day. Every spring, we amass a worldly selection of sour ales for our month-long promotion, April Showers Bring May Sours. Offerings from all over Europe and the United States will line our coolers and draft lines all month.

Some beer trends come and go, but sours have long-lasting appeal. Many Belgian and German breweries that produce sours have been doing so for hundreds of years, and American breweries that produce sours have sealed a place in the market.

“Sour” is a term that covers many types of beer, including Lambics (both flavoured i.e. Kriek, Framboise, Pêche, etc. and unflavoured i.e. Gueuze), Flanders reds & Flemish browns (both flavoured i.e. cherry and unflavoured), as well as German styles Berlinerweisse and Gose.

Yeast is the magic component that determines a sour. Some yeasts are purposely added to the beers to procure that sour flavor. However, lambics are brewed with an open fermentation technique, allowing natural wild airborne yeasts to ferment and impart a unique sour flavor.

Cape Fear Wine & Beer has around a dozen different type of sour ales in bottles and on draft year-round, but the entire month of May is devoted to showcasing these standard and several rare, unique sours. We’ll be introducing various types of sours from all over the world all month long. Stay tuned to our newsletters and our facebook page for the newest additions, and ask your bartender for the sour ales available.
